SAP Next Generation Enterprise SOA

SAP Next Generation Enterprise SOA Service Oriented Architecture

The business environment changes much more quickly today than a decade ago. In order to remain competitive, companies have to constantly evolve business strategies and operations. While the fundamentals of IT – reliability, availability, security, and manageability – are still crucial, rapid results are mandatory for business success.

The traditional enterprise applications integration products were first introduced in the 1990s. This family of products was developed well before the advent of the global economic age. At that time, the scope of enterprise business operations was limited and internally-focused. Things are very different today. The technologies of Web services and enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) were developed to pave the way for easy application integration, through the provisioning of Web services as integration units.

However, two challenges still remain – how to easily assemble new applications by composing existing software services and how to quickly develop new software components to provide the missing services, so that a composite application can be developed with much less time and effort.

SAP Research is working on key enabling technologies for a unified design-time and run-time environment for composite applications on top of enterprise SOA service oriented architecture.

Key enabling technologies can be grouped under the following technology domains:

  • Workflow modeling and management
  • Data management and persistence
  • Rule and event management
  • Security and trust
  • Scripting languages and DSL extensions
  • Business requirements capturing and modeling
